From 1 July 2026, the Australian National Immunisation Program (NIP) introduced CAPVAXIVE®, a new 21-valent pneumococcal vaccine that provides broader protection against the strains of pneumococcal bacteria most commonly responsible for serious disease in adults. CAPVAXIVE® has replaced the previous adult pneumococcal vaccines under the NIP.
Who is eligible for a free CAPVAXIVE® vaccine under the NIP?
✔ Adults aged 65 years and over
✔ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 25 years and over
✔ Adults aged 18 years and over with eligible medical conditions that increase their risk of pneumococcal disease
Even if you’ve previously received Prevenar 13® or Pneumovax 23®, you may still be eligible for a single dose of CAPVAXIVE®, provided it has been at least 12 months since your last pneumococcal vaccination.
Pneumococcal disease can lead to serious infections such as pneumonia, bloodstream infections (bacteraemia), and meningitis, particularly in older adults and those with certain medical conditions. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of severe illness.
If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible or due for vaccination, our experienced GPs are happy to help.
